For those of you not familiar with the term, audible in "band lingo" refers to a song not on the songlist, but determined by the band leader to be appropriate to play for the moment, in the moment.
It occurs to me that Ben's idea here could be played out in the transition after pre-show to achieve the real world/virtual world contrast that you are looking for, Amanda. If our singer with a guitar is isolated, then amplified, that can serve as transition, don't you think. I like the idea of the journey being a broadening.

That is also what its called when a quarterback calls the play at the line of scrimmage based on what the defense is showing.
